Pressure sensitive tapes, those with rubber-based adhesive and those with acrylic adhesive, come in a variety of formulas and sizes to meet packaging requirements. Your Signode salesperson carefully examines how your product is handled, shipped, stored and received in order to recommend the most cost effective packaging solution for your operation.

  Types of tape

  • Rubber-based adhesive – high shear strength, excellent peel adhesion and good quick-stick
  • Acrylic adhesive – cold performance, good quick-stick and resistance to aging, weathering and U/V light

  Tape characteristics

  • Quick-stick (tack) – ability of tape to stick to a surface with no external pressure
  • Peel adhesion – force required to remove a strip of tape from the surface of a carton at a 180 degree angle
  • Shear strength (holding power) – tape’s performance at the most critical location in the carton sealing
  • Clarity – tape’s transparency
  • UV resistance – ability of tape to withstand exposure to UV light without degrading

  Application methods

  • Hand application – labor intensive, manual method (high tape usage)
  • Machine-applied – fast, consistent operation (more efficient tape usage)

  Troubleshooting

Problem
Solution
Cartons opening during transit
Tape may not be withstanding cold, heat and humidity. Select a tape with a wider operating temperature
Tape flagging on cartons
Reduce the tension on the tape as it peels off the roll
Tape ruffling on cartons
Position the taping head closer to the carton for a smoother seal
New tape rolls breaking in machines
Open tape cartons carefully to prevent slicing through the top rolls
Uneven cut on tape ends
The cutter blade is probably dirty, dull or mounted incorrectly. Check to see that blade is clean, sharp and mounted correctly.
Cartons opening during long-term storage
Select a pressure sensitive tape with an adhesive that has excellent aging characteristics. The bond will increase with time.
Over-packed cartons opening during transit
Use 3"-wide pressure sensitive tape. The extra inch combats the added pressure exerted by overpacking.
